Types Of L-1 Visas

There are a few different types of L-1 visas to be aware of. The first is the L-1A visa, which is used for both managers and executives. These are corporate officials who hold executive or supervisory roles over other employees. They are not just employees of the company, but part of its corporate structure.

The second is the L-1B visa, which is used for staff members who have specialized knowledge. Exactly what this knowledge is will differ from job to job, but it must be shown to be a critical component of the company’s operations, and not knowledge typically held by the average employee.

Eligibility Requirements

Many of these employees already work for foreign branches of the company and are coming to the United States to join a U.S. branch or to help establish one. As such, they need to have a qualifying relationship with the company, and the business must be a qualified employer within the U.S. Typically, eligible workers have at least one year of continuous experience.

Generally, it takes between 2 and 4 months for an L-1 visa to be approved. This is just an average—every case is unique.

Is it possible to extend an L-1 visa?

Yes. The L-1A visa is initially valid for three years and can be renewed twice, for two years each time. The L-1B visa may be extended for a total of five years.
